What’s Going On in the Somogyi Shop

Mostly sanding is what’s been going on, for me anyways. Simultaneously finish sanding a Somogyi 00 #524, and my own Silverman #1. The Somogyi will be sent out to be French polished, and I’ve started working on the finish for my #1. I’ll be French polishing the body, and oiling the neck.

With #524 off to the finisher, it’s time to start on something else. There’s various guitars in progress to choose from, but the next priority is #502, a Modified Dreadnought which is up to the binding stage.

The Somogyi bending iron. I wonder how many Brazilian Rosewood sides have been shaped here. I first hand bend the binding, until it can fit into the bending jig.

Then I bend the binding in the jig, which gets it pretty close. It will still probably need some minor touching up by hand.

Starting on the epoxy pore fill. It took 3 coats to completely fill them.

Sanding the epoxy, until it is removed from the surface and remains only in the pores.

The neck will get an oil finish. I pore filled it too, for extra smoothness. It’s mounted on a tripod ball-head, which makes it easy to reposition.
